Iceland-based budget airline WOW air announced this week it will start flying non-stop between Reykjavik and Los Angeles and San Francisco. Though prices have not yet been announced, WOW air is famous for offering $99 tickets from various East Coast cities to Reykjavik. It also sells very cheap tickets to other European destinations.

Tickets probably won’t be as cheap from the West Coast — it is a longer flight, after all — but WOW air’s whole business model is based on low prices, so it’s probably safe to anticipate deals.

This announcement is good news for those of us who want to get to Europe for not much money. Not only does it offer one more option, but it could drive down prices on other carriers and plugs the West Coast into a bigger travel network.

Iceland is also a fantastic destination — as Laura and I learned earlier this year. When we went, however, we had to fly to JFK first. Now, the days of layovers are potentially over.
